Practice Intrapersonal Intelligence

Reading Time: 4 minutes

It is not only about what happens to you; it's also how you feel, react, and learn from it all.

Intrapersonal Intelligence* is an individual’s ability to connect, explore, and enact their feelings.  This internally focused intellect is the foundation of Self-Development.

Intrapersonal intelligence is one of the 12 “Intelligences” defined by Howard Gardner, Author of Multiple Intelligences. Specifically, Intrapersonal Intelligence is an individual’s ability to connect, explore, and enact their feelings. This internally focused intellect is the foundation of self-help.

In this presentation, I will outline the six components needed to develop and nurture your Intrapersonal Intellect. This will, in turn, lead to your ability to plan and manage your life.

Know Yourself

Self-Knowledge - Understanding oneself or one's own motives, character, values, abilities, and emotions.

Self-Knowledge Examples

Why

Knowing all the critical components of your character is the foundation for self-development. Download the Self-Knowledge worksheet and other worksheets in the Mavens 101 Life Kit-Membership Access required.

Get to Know Yourself

Be Aware of You

Self-Awareness - conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings, motives, and desires.

In contrast to self-knowledge, which is to understand your character, self-awareness is a fluid state of being. Self-awareness is figuratively holding a mirror to your inner self and consciously monitoring how your actions, thoughts, and emotions do or don’t honor your character. Self-awareness, taken a step further, is the ability to see yourself juxtapose to how others perceive you this projecting awareness is also called symbolic self-awareness.

Take a look at the statements below, notice how Self-Knowledge is a way of defining oneself and owning one’s attributes.  Self-Awareness, on the other hand, the deliberate act on that self-knowledge.

Self-Knowledge Statement

Other statements that show self-awareness are:

Why

When you make self-awareness a habit, you activate your superpower. The ability to check-in with yourself and align your actions, thoughts, and words with your true essence is the key to inner peace. Practice self-awareness to evolve and thrive based on the real you.

Practice Self-Awareness

  1. Be curious about yourself, your motives, and your behaviors. Ask yourself why then check yourself that you are in alignment with who you are.
  2. Actively listen to yourself. Focus on the voice in your head that tells you when something feels right or wrong.
  3. Ask for feedback from a trusted source, and constructively take that feedback.
  4. Be mindful of your body as you go through your day-to-day.
  5. Do all things with intent. Talk, be, and think to be true to you.

Explore Personal Feelings

Intraemotional Awareness - the ability to recognize, acknowledge, and learn from your emotions.

There are 5 essential human emotions: joy, fear, sadness, disgust, and anger. There are no good and no bad emotions.  It matters how you process and learn from your feelings.   Here are 5 ways that exploring your feelings can benefit you.

Why?

Feel to Heal- Reduce anxiety and ease depression.

Challenge your thoughts -Understand why you feel to refocus your emotion.

Insight – When decision-making is a factor, check-in with your emotions. Are they a distraction? Explore your feelings to problem solve with clarity.

Conquer – When you understand your emotions, you own and control your emotions.

How?

Remember the Times

Memory plays a vital role in self-development and identity formation. As you experience life, you create a life story. That collection of experiences embeds into your sense of self. Consciously learning from these happenings allows you to create your outlook, reaction, and control your own life story.

The best way to delve into your past experiences is to review your journal entries. Don’t journal; here is a worksheet to help you start.

Think about the past to evaluate your previously unexplored emotions and to examine key-learnings from your memories.

Maintain Healthy Self-Esteem

Self-Esteem is the internal self-critique based on life stages, happenings, and exposure. For example, our age, health, career, family, and internalization of media impact self-worth. Furthermore, the feelings associated with whatever that self-critique also meld into or self-esteem.

Why?

Because Self-Esteem impacts your life choices and, therefore, the ability to develop. It is important to maintain a healthy and balanced self-view in order to thrive.

How?

By continuing to hone your Intrapersonal Intelligence skills you will continue your path to self discovery, awareness, and confidence.
